Gillian under the Magnolia
I grew up singing and dancing along with country music tunes in my family’s living room in Barrie, ON. I often ask people what they listen to when they hear a song for the first time because I’m so often invested in the lyrics, the story. Some of the best at writing those kinds of songs (three chords and the truth) are my biggest influences; The Chicks, Lucinda Williams, and Taylor Swift. They inspired me to not only write, but also to perform, and always be true to myself. My hope is that my songs connect with you guys, just as some of my most favourite songwriters connect with me.
Gillian with an Umbrella
I wanted this EP to feel like springtime when the flowers are blooming and everyone is sitting on patios and smiling and there are trees blooming everywhere. I wanted it to show my love for my friends and my family and flowers and babies and everything that makes me who I am. I wanted to share my heartbreak through songs of sadness and anger and everything in between.
Gillian lounging on a dock
I hope you feel these emotions when listening and let them ride through you. I hope you picture galloping through a sunflower field or lounging under a willow tree reading your favourite novel, or screaming at the top of your lungs when the breakup songs make you relive your heartbreaks. Listen and enjoy and plant flowers in your headspace because life is short, and we spend a whole lot of it stuck in our heads! With that, I give you Magnolia Baby, out on April 12.
